Premise: Service Members are appreciated more than Police/Law enforcement.
Question: Why?
Answer: One is measured as greater than the other.
Police Officers are Civil Servants, they are Civilians. They used to be bound to an Oath to protect and serve, unfortunately they are no longer required to do so. A police officer cannot be held legally responsible for protecting you or failing to do so...therefor they cannot be required to do so, therefor whether or not they protect you from the evils in our society will depend on random variables but most likely have nothing to do with your well being. Police are law enforcement, they force the law upon the citizens and sometimes non-citizens of this country and they are entitled to do so violently if they so deem necessary.
Military Personnel are Uniformed Service Members, not civilians. There is a distinct and clear cut line between us, one that cannot be seen and is rarely discussed. We are different in most ways than the general public but still have few similarities to your average Man or Woman. We are servants by definition, we serve the people of the United States. We operate under the pretense that we may die for a greater good or we may die for one another but in the end...if it is necessary then our death is an acceptable trade for Freedom, the life of another, or the good of all. This is where you find the distinct difference between Police and the Military. The Police struggle to do their job and stay alive where as the Military struggle to do whatever is demanded of them while staying alive until it is time to die.
In short: "No Greater Love" is why the Military is appreciated more than Police.
