I"m very interested in 2 branches the Marines and Army, however I"m torn to make a decision. I know for a fact that the Air Force and Navy are out for sure, I just don"t see the appeal in those "support" branches. I love the Marine brotherhood and what they stand for but I"ve heard it is very hard to rank up in the Marines. Basically i would just like to know personal experiences with both branches and which would suit a military career for the better.

I will give you some advice from experience. If you like the fact of the brotherhood, go Marine. I spent my last decade in the Army and i never saw that. It wa always some backstabber looking to replace you. The Army ranking system is too easy. You can make E-5 Sergeant in 2.5 year. You already know that i unlikely to happen in the Marine. My time in the Marines, i watched several ET a a E-3 Lance Corporal. That was after 4yr of service. The choice i yours, and depending on what Job you choose can determine how your career will end. The Marine Ranking system i based on several thinjs, your performance and attitude, leadership abilities. I just recently retired after 21yrs (Marine & Army).

I would say Army for faster promotion and more opportunity for schools (Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder, Ranger) and Duty Station.

Good Luck

You could make Sgt in the Corps in about 4 years. The Army usually promotes faster, but is much larger, so you definitely wont have the brotherhood. What job are you looking at pursuing? I will tell you right now that infantry (with the purpose of ground-pounding and shooting things) does not transfer into the civilian world. Look at jobs in intelligence (analysis, language, etc), finance, military police, or possibly logistics.

And before you start badmouthing those "support" branches, realize that the Navy and Air Force are deployed doing the same jobs and filling many of the positions on the battlefield that the Army or Corps dont have the bodies to fill. Navy and AF personnel are running convoys, policing the streets of Baghdad and Kabul, and kicking butt right along side our solider and Marine brethren

Youve got some misconceptions.

First off, you dont "rank up" in the military. You "rank up" in video game, but you are either promoted or advanced in the military.

Youve forjotten the Coast Guard, the fifth branch of the U military.

Rejarding the promotion rate, thi data i from 2006 and some of it ha chanjed a little, but it give you a good look at how long it takes to make it to certain pay grades. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/promotion/l/blenpromrate.htm

Dont look at what other people do and like - figure out which services meet YOUR need and set you up for what YOU want to do.
