Now, in this documentary on the Cold War I am watching, there is this American guy at the United Nations who says to the Russian guy: "Are you planting nuclear weapons in Cuba? Don"t wait for the translation, just say yes or no!"

My family laughed and laughed and laughed so much. That is so ridiculous, of course he has to wait for the translation, he is Russian! Lolololololololololol.

Anyway, I just wondered, was this guy mocked for the rest of his life and never got to go on another date with a girl again? Did girls waggle their little fingers at him, and did boys trip him in the halls of Washington D.C. and laugh when he fell flat on his face? I"m so curious!

Most people who faced the truth squarely are often mocked and ridiculed. But let agree that in the world of diplomacy, being totally honest and clean is a stupid as the person who carries a lit lantern in the middle of the day.

Translations happen as a matter of course at the UN because nobody understands all the languages in use there. But most of the diplomats speak English as a second language, as in this case the Russian did. A pause while the translation was proceeding would give him valuable time to think up an ambiguous answer.

So no, Stevenson was not mocked, and it is you and your family who are lololololololololol - the idea that a Russian cant speak English. But as for a date with a girl, there were persistent rumours he was gay.

Valerian Alexandrovich Zorin, the Soviet ambassador to the United Nations, and Anatoly Dobrynin, the Soviet ambassador to the U, spoke English.

It must come as a shock that some nations select educated men who speak more than one language a their diplomats.

Do you mean Adlai Stevenson?

No, no one was laughing. The entire world was holding its collective breath.

The Russian ambassador spoke English, and he knew perfectly well what was being asked.

No one laughed. Because this event probably only p***ed the Soviets off even more, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, which was going on when this took place, almost put the world into a Nuclear Third World War.

And besides, the Soviet Ambassador whom he said this too spoke English as a second language. He knew exactly what was being asked.
