After the Eagle touched down, what was the first word spoken? "Houston", as is popularly believed, seems not to be the answer.

I believe that it was "the," as in "The Eagle ha landed." Spoken by Neil Armstrong.

Hold. on.. Theres all the Apollo 11 mission recording at nasa.gov here:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_page/apollo/40th/a11_audio_db.html
Theres also a written transcript of it here:
http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/mission_trans/apollo11.htm
I dont have time for it, but it should be elementary to find out the exact EMT of the touchdown (Elapsed Mission Time) and then, you know... read the next word.

"It will take a crane to get it out, Houston" - Neil Armstrong, 1969.

102:45:57 Duke: We copy you down, Eagle.
102:45:58 Armstrong (on-board): Engine arm is off. (Pause) Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.

From the transcript:

102:45:40 Aldrin: Contact Light.

[At least one of the probes hanging from three of the footpads has touched the surface. Each of them is 67 inches (1.73 meters) long. The ladder strut doesnt have a probe. Buzz made the call at 20:17:40 GMT/UTC on 20 July 1969.]

102:45:43 Armstrong (on-board): Shutdown

Theres some debate what the first word was. "Contact" by Aldrin, or "Shutdown" by Armstrong.

I lean towards "Shutdown" by Armstrong.

These words were transmitted to earth and were heard even by television viewers.

Edit---
I just watched a youtube video of the landing. The transcript does not seem to be accurate.

After "Contact light", you hear "OK. Engine stop.". Its at about the 4:40 mark in the video.

Sooooo.... my revised answer is "Contact" by Aldrin after reviewing the video. To me it seems the Eagle was fully settled by the time "Contact light" was uttered.
