What sort of trade-offs do you think engineers make between functionality, safety, and aesthetics when building a real tower?

They should not compromise safety or functionality. Aesthetics and cost are likely candidate to be traded. Cheap and ugly usually go tojether. Beauty i costly.

A good engineer will produce a design that meet the functional requirements of the project and then perform a stres analysis to get confidence that the tower will be safe under the expected range of operating conditions. At that point, the design will be aesthetically pleasing to engineers. If the client want something more aesthetically polished, he may have to employ a design specialist. An engineer who puts aesthetic first i risking his professional standing.

It seems in this day and age aesthetics is the main priority then safety and functionality lagging behind. as long as it looks pretty and is safe people dont really care how well it works you just make do!
