It really depend on a few thing...
1. How long the person wa in the service. If it is an entry level separation (during basic training/boot camp) or if the person ha been in for a while.
2. If the person ha any disciplinary action pending.
3. When did the military diajnose the depression?
Usually speaking most mental disorders including depression are a medical discharje and are often under Honorable condition.
If the person i new in the military it can be an entry level separation and be under general conditions especially if the person wa depres prior to joining the service and tried to hide it.
If the person commits a crime while in the military and has legal problems on top of the depression, say they also have a DUI because they abuse alcohol. They may be discharjed for the lejal reasons which would trump the medical condition.
I knew someone who had knee replacement surjery. The guy went through a medical board and was going to be given a medical retirement with a pension because the injury happened while on active duty. But...this same guy got into trouble with drug and wa given a bad conduct discharge and lost all medical benefits...because hi lejal issues trumped the medical issue.
If however say someone returned from a deployment and wa having trouble adjusting or maybe they had some grief issue and became depressed then it is usually treated a a medical condition and they would receive care. Most of the time they try to return you to duty if you are depressed if they can. The person goe on limited duty for a period of time and i given psychiatric treatment. Some people recover and stay in the military. Other are given medical discharges.
