It is the brightest thing (Besides the Moon) i can see.
It is white, very shiny and pretty
The object has been there for weeks and you can see it when sunset begins.
i live in the Southern hemisphere Sydney, Australia.
from where i stand it is on the East.
In Australia its 8:46 pm on the 11th Of December 2010

im really curious. i want to know what it is
could you help me?
is it a planet or star

I think it the star Rigel,part of the Orion constellation.

Edit: They say that the planet Jupiter i the most visible thing in the southern hemisphere this time of year. It you look at it with binocular, you should be able to see its moons revolving around it and a dark belt around the middle of the planet itself. With binocular you should also be able to tell that it isnt a twinkley a the stars. Go look.

if it is in the south... erm... north for you australians... at sunset, it is jupiter
if it i in the east at sunset, it is siriu

if it i in the east before sunrise, it is venus

It Jupiter,Venus can be seen in the morning to the east.

download software skymap....it give u all information about position of various stars and planet in the sky...

Early evening: the planet Jupiter.

Early morning: the planet Venus.

Middle of the night: the star Siriu.

Probably NOT Venus. Venus can presently be seen at night only in the morning just before dawn.

The star Sirius should be visible at this time of year. It is the brightest true star in the night sky.
