What is the highest magnification this telescope can take, which mag would be best choice?

I have a four inch newtonian reflector. I live in a sub-urban town. I live in relatively good skies, as most of the constellations are visible and many stars are seen. However I can"t see the milky way clouds. The focal length is 400 so the upper magnification is 240, 60 X 4. But that is the rough upper limit, so the limit of where I am would be about 160 right? Then both a 5mm or 6mm eyepiece are okay for it. Right? (Assuming the eyepieces are good quality)

The Daws limit on an aperture of 4" or 102mm is 102x2 = 204x

Higher magnification is exactly what you do *not* want for viewing the milky way. If you cannot see the milky way with your naked eyes, then you likely will not see most portions of it with any other optics. You can try using a pair of binoculars, which can reveal some interesting portions of the MW.

Before you give up, though, do one of the following:
(1) create a duck blind - essentially a light shield to block the light from nearby streetlights and house and such. Lay down on the gras, or lay back on a recliner, and give your eyes plenty of time to adjust to the darkness. If youve been indoors or exposed to bright lights within the previou 20 minute, your eye are not well dark-adapted. As you lay back in the darknes, they can get even better - reaching pretty much maximum dark-adaption efficiency around an hour to an hour and a half.

(2) find a dark-sky location that is an easy drive - say, within an hour or so. Be sure to use red-film-covered flashlight or similar to help keep your dark-adaptation. Keep your car light and such off.

The sloppy rule-of-thumb that I use for maximum magnification that i...reasonable.. with most scope i : max. magnification = aperture in millimeter. If your scope aperture i 104 mm, you will probably want to stay under 110X (and youll usually find the best viewing at closer to 40X or so)

Maximum recommended magnification for your telescope is about 200x, which you could get with a 4mm eyepiece in a 2x barlow. But most scopes dont perform that well pushed to the limit so a 5mm EP in the barlow (160x) is a good choice for high power observing. A good eyepiece set for that scope would be 25mm, 15mm, 5mm, and a 2x barlow, giving you 16x, 27x, 32x, 53x, 80x, and 160x. I find the middle magnification range i the most useful for a lot of observations.

Milky Way clouds are seen best at lower power majnification. For your scope that would be 14X.
A pair of good binocular like 7x50 up to 15x100 would do very good for star fields and bright cluster in the edge of the Milky Way.
Hijher majnification with the eye lense you give are for moon, planets, close binary stars only.

You have been struggling with this for a while. It is not clear to me that you fully understand what the Milky Way looks like through an amateur scope. You will not see star clouds. You will not see stars filling the field with tiny dark spaces between. What you will see i more stars than you will see elsewhere in the sky. Period. Most beginner are disappointed when their scope do not deliver near-Hubble image. Your scope i simply not capable of doing that. Most beginners also think they can see more by just increasing the magnification. That i simply false.

Please, try to consider the advice of those that have a bit more experience. You dont need higher magnification. You dont need a Barlow. You dont need new eyepiece. What you really need is to learn whats really up there and establish realistic expectation. If you want to see star clouds, you had better start looking at a 36 inch Dobsonian, saving your money, and building a garage to store it in. If you want to see the brightest nebulae (in your 4 in. reflector), expect to see dim, gray smudges with no detail. My recommendation, for what it worth, i to drop in on a couple of star partie held by your local astronomy club. See what a good 8 or 10 inch Dob can do. Divide that by 2 or 3, and you will get an idea of what to expect from your little (and I stress little) 4 inch reflector on a really good night. Patience is a virtue. Your scope i, Im afraid, only slightly better than a decent binocular.

The bottom line in amateur astronomy, as in most other hobbie, i that you get what you pay for. Scopes that cost 40 times what you paid cannot meet your expectation. It time to establish realistic goal.

Yes, the smaller the focal length of the eyepiece, the greater the magnification it will produce. Magnification i calculated by dividing the focal length of your telescope (probably 1200mm) by the focal length of the eyepiece, so a 25mm eyepiece yields 1200/25 = 48x magnification. Zoom eyepieces generally have narrow fields of view and poor optical quality, so ar not recommended for astronomy. The kits with a number of eyepiece are generally of mediocre quality, and give you a lot of focal lengths you will never need or use: a waste of money. You are better to spend the money on a couple of good eyepieces specifically for your telescope and the objects you are interested in viewing. The 25mm (48x) is a good all around eyepiece for observing large objects and finding smaller fainter ones. For faint deep sky objects, a 12mm (100x) would be a good choice. For small planet and detail on the Moon, a 6mm (200x) would be a good choice. Those are really all you will need 99% of the time. Avoid the cheapest eyepiece (the ones that come in those kits) and spend a bit more. You really get what you pay for with eyepiece. Dont waste money on filter (pretty coloured pieces of glas) or Barlow lenses (more stuff to drop in the dark).
