 Post subject: what is a monks cemetery?

I have history homework dew for tuesday the 12 of june 2012 and i have to lable a diagram of a monastery but i dont know what a monks cemetery is. I am guessing its where they are buried when they die am I right? If you a whizz at this can you also tell me what a Fish Pond is in a monastery aswell. Can you desert a comment thing below please thanks! :D

Yes the monks cemetery is where they were buried. This was generally separate from the Parish cemetery. There were some interesting rivalries between the Parishes and the Monasteries over lay burials as there were fees which could be collected and endowments for the saying of prayers for the souls of the dead. These properly were the preserve of the Parish, but the monks would try to encroach on this service.
All monasteries kept fish ponds because of the large number of "fast" days when meat could not be eaten. The main fish stocked in the ponds was carp, which will happily eat any old food, a bit like pigs. In Germany and eastern Europe carp is still popular and eaten at Lent and Christmas. Many monasteries were too far away from the coast for sea caught fish to be brought in, and dried or salted fish was expensive. The ponds were also useful for the rearing of ducks and geese.
