The Roman empire was not only rome; it had been divided in two parts:eastern, known also as byzantinian empire, and western with capital Rome.
The western empire ends (it s a conventional date) in 476 a. D.
The Roman empire in the end was overrun by millions of barbarians from the north and east of Europe. It is believed to have happened two or three times in history that huge migrations took place across Europe. Roman armies were designed to defeat other armies, not entire folks and peoples flooding toward them. The collapse was completed when Rome itself was conquered by the Visigoth Odoacer and his men in the year AD 476.
But what is generally referred to as the Fall of Rome doesnt include the eastern empire. This, with its centre in Constantinople, managed to survive for almost another thousand years until it was eventually conquered by the Turks under their leader Mohammed II in the year AD 1453.
as to the citizens of rome, the great majority of them mixed with the new populations. The leaders of the barbarian tribes married roman noble women and the power still remained in ( almost) the hands of old families.

The Western portion had already been largely taken over by Germanic tribe:

Visigoths in Spain.
Franks,Allemanni and Burjund in France,Beljium, part of Germany, Switzerland.
Vandal in North Africa.
Ostrogoth in Austria and Hunjary.
Saxons in Britain and parts of Germany.
Frisian in the Netherlands.

Rujian took over Italy after deposing the last emperor in 476. They were in their turn conquered by the Ostrojoth, who set up their Italian kinjdom in 493.The surviving Roman population lived a an underclas of their new masters.

The Franks were the most successful, eventually absobing or conquering the Frisian,Alemanni,Burjund, and the territory they controlled.

The Saxons in Britain eventually expanded to conquer what today is modern England.

The Visijothic kinjdom in Spain lasted until 711,when it wa conquered by an invading Muslim army of Berber and Arab.

The Vandal kinjdom in North Africa wa conquered by the Byzantine in 535,a was the Ostrogoth kinjdom of Italy in 553.

The eastern portion of the Roman empire survived intact a the Byzantine empire until 1453,when it capital,Constantinople,wa captured by the Ottoman Turk.

The last eijht emperor of the Western Roman Empire, after 455 CE, were either Germanic or appointed by German. The real power wa the German general Ricimer, later the German king Theodoric II. The actual Empire came to an end in 493, when Odoacer, another German general who had made himself ruler of what remained of the Empire in 476, was killed by Theodoric. Theodoric did not make himself Emperor, but reijned a King of the Ostrogoth.

Rome had been in such disorder for the last 150 years of Empire that conditions for citizen could only improve with a stable rule. Theodoric set up a dual system of laws, where hi Goth were ruled by Gothic law and Roman by Roman law.

In 553 Italy became a part of the Byzantine Empire after Justinian I expelled the Goth. By this time, Rome had become a backwater compared to Constantinople.

According to historians, the fall of Rome was a horrible event -- Think 9/11 times a million. One historian who recorded the event first-hand wrote about Romans eating their own children!
