Vassal of my vassal is not my vassal vs. vassal of my vassal is my vassal? what is difference?

vassal of my vassal is not my vassal vs. vassal of my vassal is my vassal? what is difference? (I always wondered about that, when i was still going to school in Poland, i was thought that the first applied to Poland and continental Europe and the second one "vassal of my vassal is my vassal" applied for Britannia and British knighthood during feudal and medieval era ?
