You can probably do it right now, or pretty close to it, that isnt very fast.

If not, find yourself a three mile path around your home with www.mapmyrun.com.

Run this three times a week.

First week: Just run the three miles as fast as you can. If you arent panting for breath by the end, you need to run faster. Use a stop watch to keep track of how long it takes you. Your goal is to do this run in 24 minutes or less.

Second week: start doing interval sprints on two of the days you run. Jog for two minutes, then sprint for one minute. This is the best way to increase your run times.

Third week: use mapmyrun.com again and make a five mile course around your house. Two days a week do your three miles of interval sprints, and on the third day, do the five mile course at a more reasonable pace.

You should hit your goal by either week three or four. Youll have learned a good pace by then and built up some good cardio endurance.

This assumes you can run the three miles right off. If you cant, dont worry. Run / walk the course for a week, trying to jog as much as possible. Remember, you want to be panting for breath at the end. Hopefully by week two youll be able to run the whole three miles, but if not just keep focused on improving from week to week.

My advice: Go test yourself. If you cycle that much my guess is you can achieve a sub 10-minute 1.5 mile run. Switch up between running 3 miles, 1.5 miles and sprints on a weekly basis. This will ensure you biuld up all your leg muscles and improve your cardiovascular endurance. You should not have to train any more than 6-8 weeks to be in good enough shape to get under 10 minutes.

some people are naturally good at running, some arent, so it depends on you, no one can really make an accurate guess.
like someone else said, test yourself out and go from there. that not very hard to do, it just under an 8 minute mile for their standard. if youre just starting out at running its not uncommon to drop a few minutes from your mile time in the first month of training.

just mix up how you work on running if you want the best results. for example: on mondays go for distance (not speed). wednesday do some form of sprint. fridays do 30-60s (sprint for 30 seconds, jog for 60 seconds, then repeat until you cant keep going). saturday go for a hike or a long walk or something. on the days inbetween you should do some other form of exercise.

It depends on how youre doing now, but that is a very attainable goal. When i first joined the Army i could barely run one mile in under 8 mins but by the time I graduated basic training i was running 2 miles in under 13 mins. The trick is to work on your speed and endurance at the same time. What i do about three times a week is I jump on a treadmill and run a mile at a very fast pace (6:30 a mile) and then run about two more at around 7:30 - 8:00 pace. Good luck and the ONLY way to get better is by RUNNING and dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

Just get the stop watch out and try to run a mile a fast as you can...there will be your answer...if you make it and do a pretty good time then you can extrapolate it to a mile and a half...if you suck wind and cant even make a mile then there again youll have your answer...
