Open warfare with a defined battlefield is a thing of the past. In this age, terrorist attacks can take place anywhere. Add to that the risky behavior of young adults and the possibility of injury or death are high. This is especially true for people in the 18 to 25 age range. Ironically, because of the structured atmosphere and discipline in the military, You would be safer in the service than as a civilian.
Within the services, some career field are more likely that others to be actually in a combat role. Oddly, this is no assurance of relative safety. In Afghanistan, many casualties were support personnel rather than combat personnel. The causes of many casualties being IEDs targeted at such things as supply trucks.
I was an Air Force Medic for 8 years, then a Police Officer. I have never heard gunfire while on duty that was not aimed at a paper target.
