Alcohols (potable and non-potable), smelting of ore, medicine preperation, gunpowder, distillation, are all thing we use to thi day in many industries and they all use alchemical processes or processes derived from alchemical processe.

In short if you majored in chemistry it would not be a sin. God want you to discover more about Hi world, that i why He gave us science. You would actually be worshipping God in a different way by studying and seeking to understand His world better.
