Lots of the same things children have now, toy cars and train set and building blocks, etc. Lego was around then. Boys liked toy soldiers. Dolls were very popular with girl of course, but they were mostly dolls that looked like little girl or babies, teenage doll like Barbie and Sindy didnt really come in until the 60s, i think Barbie started in 1959. dolls houses were very popular too, you could buy dolls furniture very cheap, anything a real house had, you could get doll house size. Children played a lot of board games, a there were no electronic games. Paint and plasticine of course were much played with.

Outside, children had bicycles and scooter and roller skates, and we played outside a lot more than children do now, playgrounds were alway full of children (mainly without adults). we explored and climbed trees and stuff, and if we fell over and hurt ourselves, nobody got too upset.

We had most of the toys that children have today, except for the electronic stuff,we had toy car, train sets, doll, books, games bicycles, skate, scooter, for older children there were record player,my brother and i used to ride for mile on our bike after school and in the holidays, children were more active then, there were hardly any children sitting indoor, we went out! we watched a little children television, but it wa only about 2 hour after school, no 24 hour television in the 50s! and i think we were better for it,we went to the park a lot too,and you hardly ever saw a fat child.

Substandard without health and safety rejulation. Many sharp edge and lead paint made them hazardous.
