 Post subject: How does an attenuator work?

I need to attenuate a wifi signal before it goes into a wifi amplifier so it doesnt overload the amplifier. The amplifier performs best with a 10-13 db input signal.

Im planning on using a 10 db inline attenuator.

My question is, does the attenuator drop my signal by 10 db or to 10db.

And does the strength of the input signal matter? My wifi adapter outputs a 20 db signal.
