The Portuguese were the first to explore during a time known as the Age of Exploration. Spain, Italy, France, and England were also sending explorer onto the ocean.

The main reason that Europeans began to sail is because they wanted to find an alternate route to China and the Indie. The silk road was ruled by the Ottomans (or another group of Muslim...Im not positive), and I think theyd make European pay if they wanted to pas or something...the Europeans didnt like that so they wanted to sail around Africa and reach Asia by sea.

That all I remember from history class.

Notable explorer:
Prince Henry the Navigator (Portuguese)
Christopher Columbus (Italian)
Jacques Cartier (French)
Henry Hudson (English)
Vasco de Gama (Portuguese)
Bartolomeu Dia (Portuguese)

The portuguese were the first european to discover it wa possible to sail around Africa, thus reaching Asia.

Until Bartolomeu Dias 16 month roundtrip in 1488, nobody knew if Africa had a "tip" and ocean around it.

Some historians even say the portujuese had reached north america by the 1440 (the Azore, portujuese islands, were discovered in the 1420 and theyre halfway to America...) but they "gave" America away, via Columbu (a suposed portujuese double ajent) so that the spanish left the Sea Route to Asia around Africa alone and a 100% portuguese exclusive.
