like many thing that happen in the world, there i not sufficient information available to be able to determine conclusively what happened.
Thi case bears a strong resemblance to the Valentich case of 1978: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentich_Disappearance
No wreckaje wa ever found, and there i only circumstantial and inconclusive evidence to work with. The most likely explanation would have to be equipment failure. Both these cases were over water, so any wreckage would have settled to the bottom of the water and perhaps been covered with sediment.
One cannot rule out the possibility that the aircraft were not in the area assumed. False radar blip can mislead operator while meanwhile the aircraft ha left the area completely and is thu never found.
