 Post subject: How do you zip a file using the command prompt and 7zip?

I use the command:

7z a datastuff.txt

It fails due to "The system cannot find the file specified." Its clearly in the directory (and I navigate to the directory in command prompt) so I really dont know why its not working. It creates a zipped file, but is empty. What gives!?
