Enjoy the motorized hanging cradle, the baby gas mask, the UV-ray baby branding prod, and more "infant-friendly" gadgets from our archives

There are certain areas of expertise that came naturally to us over the years: cars, space, aviation, and computers, to select a few. During the first half of the past century, we even provided practical features for scientifically-minded housewives. But children and babies? Not so much. Hence this compilation of PopSci"s most dubious child-rearing technologies.

Click to launch the photo gallery.

We"ll be truthful: As fond as we are of the crackpot inventions that have popped up on our pages over the years, we"re not in the least bit surprised that most of the devices in this gallery never took off. At least half of them were made for the benefit of adults, rather than for infants, so in retrospect they look comically misguided. A motorized baby hammock suspended by wooden beams, for instance, looks more like a swinging jail cell than a cradle, while a UV lamp used for branding newborns in the hospital probably drew inspiration from a cattle prod. Then there"s the baby can, literally a perforated can with a lid for storing babies on passenger trains.

At the same time, we meant well with the hooded baby gas masks and the baby sleeping porch, a compartment you could install outside the window (and 100 feet above ground) to give your baby fresh air.

Creeped out yet? Browse through our gallery to see these inventions in detail (and to thank your opportune stars that none of them fell in your mother"s hands).

We value employees who are risk-taking and detail-oriented, have deep technical knowledge, and can navigate through tall grass to capture wild creatures. It turns out that these skills have a lot in common with another professionthat of the Pokémon Master. With that in mind, weve worked with Pokémon and Nintendo to develop a new training tool to help people hone their Pokémon-capturing abilities using Google Maps.

Dozens of wild Pokémon have taken up residence on streets, amidst forests and atop mountains throughout Google Maps. To find and catch em all, youll need to tap into your inner Pokémon Master.

If you ponder youre up to the challenge, hold your Poké Ball and the newest version of Google Maps for iPhone or Android. Then tap the search bar, press start, and begin your quest.
Leave no stone unturned or city unzoomed as you seek out wild Charizards and Pikachus to augment to your Pokédex. Be vigilantyou never know if a wild Steelix will appear in Tokyo, Japan or New York City, USA. And follow Google Maps on Google+, Facebook and Twitter for hints and tips.
Time is of the essencein the words of Professor Oak, The early bird gets the worm, or in this case, the Pokémon.

Lord Have Mercy Little iApps

You can"t buy absolution-at least, not anymore-but $1.99 will help you get there. A new app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch has been "developed for those who frequent the sacrament and those who wish to return" in what is the first known imprimatur to be given for an iPhone or iPad app. Can we get an Amen?

Confession: A Roman Catholic App was developed by Little iApps to help walk the penitent through the sacrament of penance, a.k.a. confession. The app won"t impart absolution to you-sorry, but there"s no getting out of the real act of confession-but it does help one organize his or her sins into a handy list and maintain proper confessional decorum.

The app helps users examine their consciences by listing the 10 Commandments and asking users questions about their lives related to the essential rules of Christianity. Password protected profiles even allow the app to question a penitent soul about aspects of Christianity as they pertain to the person"s age, marital status, and gender, helping them to better enumerate their spiritual shortcomings and make sure nothing is forgotten when the get into the booth. Almost like a grocery list, except instead of general food items it lists all the ways you fall short of the glory of God.

It also helps users through the process of the confession itself, reminding them that when the priest says "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good," the proper response is "For His mercy endures forever." It even contains the traditional texts of several oft cited Catholic prayers, so when the priest prescribes you a handful of Hail Marys and a couple of Our Fathers, you won"t be at a loss for words.

The app is a direct response to Pope Benedict"s January World Communications Day address in which he gave new media and social media the Papal stamp of permit as tools for helping parishioners find "meaning, truth, and unity" in their everyday lives. That is, of course, if it is used wisely.

No word on whether the Vatican considers Furious Birds a "wise" use of technology.

World"s Smallest Pico Projector Is Very Small, Not Very Bright

World"s Tiniest Pico Projector Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany have created the world"s thinnest pico projector - less than quarter of an inch thick. To ensure that the image from the 6x6 millimeter device was still visible, they used a new micro-lens system that allows it to project a bright 800 by 480 pixel display.

The system uses 45 red, green and blue micro-lenses, each holding a 200x200 pixel LCD. Each lens produces its own image, all of which patchwork to create the display you see on your wall. However, the tiny projector only emits 11 lumens of light, four less than the best of other small picos on the market (though about the same as 3M"s pocket camcorder/projector hybrid).

Marcel Sieler, the scientist behind the project, claims that if the new system were scaled up to the size of current pico projectors, it would produce about 90 lumens--pretty impressive. As it stands, the projector is tiny enough to fit inside a smart phone, but the problem is that even existing pico projectors are really not that bright--you need to use them in a dark room for it to be worth your while, and even then clearest images are rather small and dim. Sieler is currently working to reduce the LCD pixels from 8.5 microns to 3. But if it"s going to be worth it to incorporate pico projectors into smaller gadgets like smartphones, we"ll need a combination of miniature size and very bright images (with higher resolutions). For now, still, it looks like a choice between one and the other.

Nighttime dreams may be controlled by sleeper through electrical current

Reuters/Katarina Stoltz

The result is called "lucid dreaming," meaning that the sleeper understands that he or she is dreaming and can shape the plot.

Using electrical current on the brain allows the sleeper to induce brain waves of a obvious frequency, which provokes the lucid dreaming an intermediate stage between two forms of consciousness, as many psychologists put it.

Lucid dreams are between rapid eye movement (REM) dreams (representing the immediate present and have no access to the past or future) and being awake. This special state is considered unique to humans.

Special laboratory tests involving 27 volunteers (15 women and 12 men aged 18 to 26) have been used for the study, led by psychologist Ursula Voss of Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.

The volunteers spent up to four days in a sleep lab, and the gadget TACS (Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation) which triggered the electrical current comprised two small boxes with electrodes that are placed next to the skull.

In fastidious, the device uses the frontal and temporal regions, located on the forward top and side of the brain respectively, AFP reported.

The volunteers REM (rapid eye movement) stage of sleep represented a lucid dream, which they reported when they awoke. They felt as if their dream self was a third party whom they were merely observing.

"I am driving in my car, for a long time," one of the volunteers said, as quoted by AFP.

"Then I arrive at this place where I havent been before. And there are a lot of people there. I think maybe I know some of them but they are all in a bad mood, so I go to a separate room, all by myself," he added.

Their dreams were accompanied by electrical activity called gamma waves, which are also connected with lucid dreaming.

Those brain waves are usually associated with executive functions like higher-order thinking, as well as awareness of ones mental state, but they dont occur in the REM stage of sleep.

Despite the discovery, Voss doesnt think that the lucid-dreaming devices can be exploited commercially, as the machines we currently have do not toil well, she told Reuters. Plus, such an activity should always be monitored by medics.

However, the technology could help people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition which involves nightmares replaying the initial terrifying experience.

"By learning how to shape the dream and distance oneself from the dream," Voss said, such patients could reduce the emotional impact and begin to recover.

The market for wearable gadgets will reach about $1.8 billion within the next four years, according to Juniper Research, a firm that specializes in mobile telecommunications. Trouble is, its coarse to wear a gadget without looking like youre wearing a gadget. Plastic or silicone fitness monitors, such as the Fitbit and Nike Fuelband, practically scream activity tracker! And smart watches are large, heavy, and obviousthe calculator watches of the 21st century.

But that graceless stage may be drawing to a close. As sensors become smaller and cheaper, and low-energy Bluetooth data sharing mitigates the need for bulky batteries, designers can integrate smart components in unobtrusive ways. The Misfit Shine activity tracker, for instance, looks like a piece of jewelry (and can perpetuate four months on one observe battery). Start-up Cuff will embed location sensors into a line of bracelets and necklaces. Fitbit has even signed a bargain with designer Tory Burch to create accessories for its products.

Baking smart components into clothes and accessories is also getting easier to do. In March, Google unveiled the Android Wear operating system, which is optimized to deliver at-a-glance information, such as appointments and text messages, so designers wont have to spend months developing custom code for their devices. Instead, they can just do what theyve always done: focus on the fashion.
