Fellow Atheists, we ,here, on a rock, in the corner of the universe, on our own. Feelings

Knowing of the impending doom of our planet and the unimportance of anything our species will ever achieve or understand, in the long run, how does it make you feel

When you think about the beauty of the cosmos (those times where you feel really small but also that you belong), how do you feel about space, time and everything

Before you answer I"d prefer you to get into the mood, so please watch this video, then answer. :)

P.S. Sorry to sound slightly cheesy and/or pretentious, but I am truly interested. Please answer (intelligently).

I do care a lot about things that will not affect me in my lifetime. I am very concerned about global warming, natural disasters in impoverished corners of the globe, and the general state and continuity of the human race.

Given that there is no afterlife, and that my time on Earth will be so fleeting, I can"t explain why this is. I suppose these concerns constitute what it is to be human. I feel that humanity and nature is overwhelming benevolent (if not selfish), and this is a cause worth fighting for and striving to protect.

But this is no longer a science, we dip into philosophy.

A sense of wonder, hope, and privilege.

I"m not an atheist, but even if I were, I wouldn"t see things that way. What we humans can achieve is important to us, and that"s important enough.

Impending doom of our planet - I can"t really get all that concerned over something that will happen in about 3 billion years (when the sun expands to a red giant).
Not really what I would call impending.

The universe is a glorious thing and we are lucky to be part of it, to be able to perceive just a bit of its beauty and wonder. No matter how small I may feel, I am still a part of everything. To paraphrase Sagan I am made of star stuff.

our lives are less than a second in the universe"s watch.we don"t matter, nor do our feelings.the cosmos we"ll go on without us,without our solar system.our opinions won"t change a thing.and by the way you talk about atheists and then about feelings.philosophy started evolving around man and his feelings ignoring evething else in ancient greece and later became the basis of most religions.I"m an atheist but no offence you still have a little bit of god in you

my feelings - meh.

I feel that whether we as a human race develop the technology to live outside of the earth and maybe find other forms of life, or whether we die out along with the dinosaurs there is nothing we can do about it, and either way i will be long gone by then.
