Impossible to say, really. It might have spread to the Continent and replaced monarchy in western Europe. It might have increased the power of the "Leveler" at home; and then again, it might have produced even greater tyrannies in the name of "The People".

Just speculation, but there would have likely been another war. The English Republic, unlike the later American Variety, had no written constitution or Bill of Rights. It was more of a theocratic military dictatorship with Oliver Cromwell king in all but name. It relied on the personality of one man to keep things going. "Tumbledown Dick" didnt have his fathers abilities. If the Republic continued, invasions from France or Scotland would have finished off whatever internal strife hadnt.

I agree that it is impossible to say although, contrary to what another answer state, Cromwell did not try to return to a monarchy. He actually refused the crown when it was offered to him. Although it i also wrong to suggest, as yet another answer does, that the renaissance would not have happened (it already had!), it i interesting to speculate whether the advances of scientific knowledge under such men a Locke nad Newton would have happened as rapidly as they did under the Restoration, bearing in mind the patronage of the Royal Society by Charles II. If the Great Fire of London had happened under the Commonwealth would we have had St. Pauls Cathedral?

The Commonwealth wasnt anything wed regard as a republic. It was a very unpopular military dictatorship. As often happens, the dictator tried to turn it into a monarchy with Richard Cromwell as his successor. He was even more unpopular than his father and the country soon got rid of him and brought the Stewarts back. If that hadnt happened, we wouldnt have all the expressions in the English language that include the word Dick.
