On the Front Lines of Ebola’s Most Pressing Mystery

KENEMA, Sierra Leone—Alex Moigboi was panicking. He was preparing to enter the Ebola ward wearing just a pair of gloves and a plastic gown over his scrubs. It was totally inadequate—like a firefighter entering a burning building wearing a pair of Ray-Bans—and Alex knew it. But he couldnt find the rest of the protective gear […]

The female Ebola sufferer, whose identity hasnt been disclosed, returned to Scotland from Sierra Leone via transfers in Casablanca and London, and arrived at Glasgow airport at 23.30 local time.

The patient, after feeling unwell, was admitted to the Brownlee Unit for Infectious Diseases at Glasgows Gartnavel Hospital campus early on Monday morning and put into an isolation unit at 07.50 local time, reported the Press Association.

The Scottish government say the patient was a healthcare worker, who had been helping to fight the disease in West Africa. They also enlarge there is no need to panic at the moment.

All possible contacts with the patient are now being investigated and anyone deemed to be at risk will be contacted and closely monitored. However, having been diagnosed in the very early stages of the illness, the risk to others is considered extremely low, said the Scottish government.

British PM, David Cameron, has been notified.

Anyone who was on the Heathrow to Glasgow flight on Sunday evening is asked to call 08000 858531

According to UK and Scottish protocol, anyone carrying the Ebola virus on UK soil will be taken to a special high-level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in London. The hospital has the best facilities and trained staff to negotiate with the virus.

The Glasgow patient is not the first Ebola infected person to be treated in the UK. British healthcare worker William Pooley was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital having contracted the disease in West Africa. He was transported back to the UK on a specially equipped Royal Air Force cargo plane on August 24.

He went on to make a full recovery and later agreed to donate blood plasma to try and combat the disease. He subsequently returned to Sierra Leone to help local health workers fight the virus.

The number of people infected with Ebola in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia has passed the 20,000 mark according to the World Health Organization, according to Reuters. The health body also said that more than 7,800 people have died from the virus since its outbreak in March.

Sierra Leone has been the most badly affected of the three nations, with the country suffering the worst Ebola outbreak on record.

Scientists target universal protein to treat brain cancer and Ebola

Reuters / Mark Blinch

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) have figured out a protein - GRP78 - that may be a possible target to rid humans of such viral and bacterial infections as Ebola, Influenza and Hepatitis, as well as be a way to cure brain cancer.

The pre-clinical study which was led by the US University, and published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology, used a drug combination - with Viagra being one of its elements - to target GRP78 and related proteins. As a result, researchers managed to prevent replication of a variety of major viruses in infected cells, and made some antibiotic-resistant bacteria vulnerable to common antibiotics. Evidence that brain cancer stem cells were killed was also found.

"Basically, weve got a concept that by attacking GRP78 and related proteins: (a) we hurt cancer cells; (b) we inhibit the ability of viruses to infect and to reproduce; and (c) we are able to kill superbug antibiotic-resistant bacteria," said the studys lead investigator, Paul Dent.

After studying the effect in cancer cells, the researchers applied the same drug combination to target the protein for infectious diseases. Viral receptor expression on the surface of target cells was reduced, which decreased infectivity, and replication of a virus in infected cells was also prevented.

By proving GRP78 to be a "drugable" target, researchers say the findings open new possibilities in treating various viral infections - "that certainly most people would say well never be able to treat."

According to Dent, scientists already know that in mice the same Viagra treatment can kill tumor cells without harming other tissues, and the next steps in further discovering the possibilities of the method have already been taken.

Dallas nurse Nina Pham (Reuters / HO)

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Nina Pham said she continues to suffer from body aches and insomnia after contracting the deadly disease from Thomas Eric Duncan a patient she cared for at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, who was the first ever man to be diagnosed in the United States with Ebola. He passed away in October in Dallas.

I wanted to believe that they would have my back and take care of me, but they just havent risen to the occasion, Pham said.

Pham plans to file her lawsuit on Monday against Texas Health Resources for alleged neglect in light of the hospitals poor training, lack of proper equipment, and violations of her privacy.

All of the above made her a casualty of a hospital systems failure to prepare for a known and impending medical crisis, according to the interview.

Pham said that staff who treated Duncan were not given the right protective gear and needed more training.

The 26-year-old nurse is seeking compensation for physical pain, mental distress, medical expenses, and loss of future earnings. At the same time, she also wants to make hospitals and big corporations fulfill that nurses and health care workers, especially frontline people, are distinctive.

We dont want nurses to start turning into patients, she stressed.

She described the violent atmosphere she had to labor in, as well as the lack of guidance coming from the top about how to handle a complex situation like treating Duncan.

In response to the upcoming lawsuit, Texas Health Resources chose not to comment on any of the allegations.

Nina Pham bravely served Texas Health Dallas during a most difficult time. We continue to support and wish the best for her, and we remain optimistic that constructive dialogue can resolve this matter, spokesman Wendell Watson said in a statement on Friday.

Pham became the first person to contract the deadly Ebola virus in the United States endure year. She has overcome the disease and was released from the hospital in October.
