Iodine is group 17 and has 7 valence e-. It uses 5 of these e-s to form the five I:F bonds (each element contributes 1 e- to the bond); this leaves 2e- remaining on the I and so this is an AX5E system. It is based on an octahedron, and hence sp^3d^2 hybridization, with one site occupied by the lone pair (E) which is ignored when naming: it has a square-based pyramidal structure. Anything with sp2 hybridization has trigonal planar geometry. |
