During a moment of insanity I bought a bunch of 1/2400 transitional steam warships. In retrospect they are going to look kind of boring on the table if my impressions of this eras warship colors are confirmed as the size of the models and predominantly black ships dont allow for much interesting detail. Can you folks confirm color schemes for these early Victorian fleets or suggest alternate color schemes Did these nations have different peacetime versus wartime colors?
Here are my impressions Great Britan - all black, white gunports Any highlight colors? France - all black, white gunports Any highlight colors? Italy - black or dark grey, white gunports Any highlight colors? Austria - light greyGunport colorsAny highlight colors?
Thanks,
Al

What year? For a long time the Royal Navy was Buff, White and Black. Also remember that brightwork was exactly that and wood was not painted. The ships I´ve seen HMS Warrior, Gannet and USS Olympia don´t look dull to me at all

I prefer fuchsia, persimmon, even mauve. But that´s what happens when you give a woman her own navy.

There is a book titled The Victorian Navy, about the Royal Navy. I recall this book showed black hulls, white upperworks, buff colored stacks, kinda like the USN during the 1890s. Erich Groner in German Warships 1815-1945 volume One has some good information too. In 1867, German warships Colour Scheme #1 indicates black almost overall except white on paddle boxes, charthouse, awnings, ventilators cross trees and a narrow full-length band at the level of the bulwark top edge. Yellow was on masts and topmasts, with red for boot topping. Then in 1878 Colour Scheme #2 was introduced with black on the hull up to the outside edge of the upper deck. Yellow was on all fitings above the white bulwark stripe including nets, masts, topmasts, yards, davits, ventilators, funnels. White was on paddle boxes, charthouse, crosstrees plus the full -length band at the level of the bulwark top edge. Then in 1890, the Germans used the same scheme but with white hulls and a broad yellow bulwark band. Hope this helps.

Men only have seven or so colors to choose from, and the three words you mentioned aren´t amongst them :-)

There are images that may be googled. Don´t overlook using the word
"model" in your search.

An internet hosted photo of the USS Buffalo 1892-1915 appears to be whitish. This seems to be before gray became popular methinks.

There is a model of the USS Hartford done with a pure white hull and a website says a copy of it is at the Civil War Museum of Texas. This of course conflicts with the black paint job at the Port Columbus museum.

So I think it may be a safe guess that naval ship color schemes varied over time during the Victorian period that may include the same ship. Government paint suppliers may have been provided by the lowest bidder, and graft may have played a part in color decision making, causing a color scheme change every few decades.

The ships I bought are 1860s and 70s. Warrior, Gloire, steam frigates, battle of Lissa, etc. The problem with google images are that they seem to be all over the place as to colors. Lots of stuff in the period before the predreadnoughts was black hulls or perhaps grey. Most images are of little help and in some cases very conflicting. Models and paintings may show the same ships in a number of different colors. Ive seen Re Di Italia in grey, redish tan, and black. The b&w photos of the era are of such poor quality that it is almost impossible to guess colors.

Well, at least the USS Hartford model claims it was professionally built. It looks to be about 2 or 3 feet long.

They must have had some basis for painting it white.

White would have been used during peacetime. It had a black hull with a white strake during the ACW.

I´ve seen pictures of that model, and in addition to the color it was painted there are other detail differances from what I´ve found in research. For example, the model in question has wooden deadeyes on the bottom shrouds instead of the metal turnbuckles that were found on the Hartford.

It may have been professionaly built, but I don´t trust the research.
