BP Plc and Exxon Mobil Corp. took the best deal they could get in Iraq last year when they won the largest oil contracts since addam Hussein was toppled in 2003. Oil companies may wait a long time to get a better one.

Parliamentary elections may produce a weak or unstable government incapable of tendering new oil contracts, said Samuel Ciszuk, a London-based analyst at IHS Global Insight. He said he does expect the 10 technical-services contracts won by Exxon, BP and 20 other companies to be honored.

(Bloomberg) -- OPEC is increasing oil drilling at the fastest rate in 2 1/2 years, even as production exceeds its quotas by the equivalent of a supertanker of crude a day and delegates prepare to pledge no increase in output.

The 12-nation group boosted its number of oil and gas rigs by 8.4 percent in January and February, the biggest two-month gain since June 2007, data from Baker Hughes Inc. show. OPEC members excluding Iraq pumped 26.8 million barrels a day last month, 1.9 million more than targeted, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Shipments will rise again this month, according to tanker-tracker Oil Movements.

Like one of those perverse twists in the tales of The Arabian Nights (many of which, you will recall, took place in Baghdad and Basra), modern Iraq s greatest source of prosperity its vast reserves of oil and natural gas could also be the biggest long-term threat to hopes for democracy. Yes, on Sunday the Iraqis once again proved bravely, stubbornly, even astoundingly that they won t be kept away from the polls by mere car bombs and mortar shells.

But by and large they were voting for the same coterie of politicians who ve made Iraq among the five most corrupt nations in the world. The country s near-term future is just about waiting, after the election, for a new government to take shape over the next many weeks. But its long-term future could be haunted by what Stanford professor Larry Diamond calls the #8232;oil curse.

Whenever I talk to investors about oil markets, questions about Iraq are sure to follow. Some want to know if a rapid increase in Iraqi production could swamp demand and send oil prices tumbling. Others ask about the best stocks to play increased Iraqi drilling activity and the auction of new contracts to produce Iraqi fields.

VIENNA Russia"s rising crude shipments to Asian markets via the Pacific Ocean pose no threat to Middle Eastern producers" position as the largest suppliers to the region, OPEC members including top exporter Saudi Arabia said Tuesday.

Soaring oil demand from China and other developing Asian economies will absorb rising production from Russia and Iraq over coming years, Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi told reporters in Vienna, where the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries meets Wednesday.
