Outcry against #039;colonial#039; takeover by BP of Rumaila oilfield in Iraq

The British oil giant BP will today take control of Iraq s biggest oilfield in the first important energy deal since the 2003 invasion. The move has created uproar among local politicians invoking resentful memories of their nation s colonial past.

The agreement to develop the Rumaila field, near the southern city of Basra, will potentially put Iraq on the path to rivalling the riches of Saudi Arabia within a decade if the Government can fend off corrupt officials, continuing terrorist attacks on pipelines and political uncertainty.

Some international oil companies have overstated how high they can take Iraq"s crude oil production, a senior government adviser said today, ahead of a second round of oilfield development tenders this week.

Thamir Ghadhban, adviser to Iraq"s prime minister and a former oil minister, told an industry conference that he believed 6 million barrels per day (bpd) was a realistic target for Iraq"s oil output within the next six to seven years.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq"s leaders expect a flood of petrodollars from oil deals to lift the country out of poverty after years of conflict and corruption but few Iraqis are convinced.

The Oil Ministry this weekend ended a second auction of contracts to develop Iraq"s prized oilfields. Both rounds yielded 10 deals that officials predict will boost capacity to 12 million barrels a day, rivalling top exporter Saudi Arabia.

BAGHDAD - Armed Iranian troops crossed the border and took over an Iraqi oil well, violating the country"s sovereignty, an Iraqi government spokesman said Friday.

Iraq"s national security council met Friday night to discuss the takeover of well No. 4 by the Iranian group in the al-Fakkah oil field.
